The Ocean Twilight Zone
Redesigning an exhibit to explore the mysteries of this deep-sea frontier.
THE STORY
WHOI launched the Ocean Twilight Zone Project to explore one of our planet’s hidden frontiers. This dimly lit region 200–1,000 meters below the ocean’s surface is home to an estimated one million undiscovered species and up to 90% of the world’s fish biomass. Largely unexplored, WHOI has harnessed new tools and technologies to advance knowledge of this mysterious ocean zone.
MY ROLE
I redesigned the Ocean Twilight Zone exhibit to a smaller space in WHOI’s Discovery Center. I began by evaluating the existing exhibit’s layout, identifying areas where I could improve messaging, information flow, and layout. I introduced a new color palette and typography to capture the zone’s dim, bioluminescent environment, while retaining certain visual elements like the animal illustrations and migration. The redesign helps foster curiosity and connection with the ocean twilight zone.
